John Huston

Dave’s back from a trip to Utrecht; John’s sitting in the rain in Cleveland, and between the three of us we have a lively discussion of early-stage boards and a concept John calls, the Premortem.

Dave, long term listeners will remember, is one of Los Angeles’ most active and successful angel investors; he’s made 88 early-stage investments. John is the past-Chairman of the Angel Capital Association and is the hands-on manager of the Ohio TechAngels in Cleveland.

First, John wants to distinguish pre- from post-mortem; he calls it “Tombstone Training” when investors gather at the end of a startup’s short life — to lament and to understand why. The premortem is an imagining of such a fatal outcome for investors — and trying to ask why before it happens such that the unhappy outcome can be avoided.

“Sounds a little ghoulish,” I challenge him, “and don’t some accuse you of having a preconceived negative opinion?” John’s got good answers to all the questions. Download his one-pager on the premortem process and follow along.

John and Dave have a lot to say, about what wasn’t said, in the recent James Geshwiler and Brad Feld discussion of boards.

We cap off our time together with a discussion of the Ohio TechAngels’ Exit Road Map; download a copy to share with your angel group.

This morning’s email from Tony Clarke got me motivated:

Hope you’re keeping well. Just to let you know that I will be in Austin in early March and look forward to the Bike Tour. My girlfriend Susan, too, joining the Bike Tour with me if OK.

So I just paid a deposit with Austin’s Barton Springs Bike Rentals who will be our guide and outfitter for the 2nd Annual Summit Bike Ride. As you make plans to attend the ACA Annual Summit, come a day early for the bike ride.

Like last year, the outfitter will supply the bike and helmet, make sure everything fits well, then lead us on a tour around Austin. Of course, you know it’s Lance Armstrong’s home town, so expect a great ride.

We’ll meet at 7am Tuesday March 6th in the lobby of the Hilton. The outfitter will shuttle us to the ride start. It’s a “no-drop” ride which means no one gets left behind, so whatever your riding skills, you’re welcome. The outfitter provides 3 guides, so we’ll enjoy lots of support and hear classic tales of Austin’s colorful past as we visit its most popular sites.

Register here; the cost is $60 per person, plus a generous tip for the tour guides. Limited to the first 15 to sign-up.

in Ottawa

All smiles with Vancouver's Bob Chaworth-Musters and Calgary's Randy Thompson at the NACO Summit in Ottawa

There’s a good turn-out for the 11th Annual National Angel Summit in Ottawa. Of course, I’m seeing lots of old friends as this is my 5th time attending. Last night the first words I heard, “Come to dinner with us?” from Ross Finlay of the First Angel Network in Halifax. We were a party of 8 at a super BBQ restaurant on York Street, the SmoQue Shack. Maybe I could have done without a stop at the Scotch Bar on the way home, but it’s all part of the fun of gathering with Canada’s top angel leaders as we discuss best practices.

Andrew Wilkes leads a discussion on access to foreign markets

Canadian angels are always interested in syndication and access to foreign markets for their portfolio companies, so the discussions are quite stimulating. Other morning sessions focused on statistics; one presenter showed only 4% of business angels in Europe are women compared to 12% in the US which seemed much lower than I would’ve guessed.

Of course, there’s more than a few references to Vancouver-based Basil Peters’ Early Exits; one presenter described exits as the biggest challenge to angel investors and don’t we all know that to be the case? OECD’s Karen Wilson described the sustainability challenges facing angel associations, networks and groups due to a loss of government funding in some locales.

The best one-liner of the day, so far, goes to Colin Mason who says, “Angel investing is like grandparenting: You get all the fun without the 24×7 effort!” He struck a nerve with that.

Tonight? More networking across the dinner table I’m sure, then tomorrow I’m invited to lunch at Parliament, but I must wear a tie, so there’s a little shopping to do this afternoon.

It’s Austin!

By Frank | Filed in Annual Summit

Austin's bats, will they make an appearance in March?
I doubt the bats will be back in time, but Austin’s a great city for the next Summit. It’s home to Lance Armstrong, which is a good excuse for coming a day early for the 2nd Annual ACA Bike Ride. Plus, it’s the Live Music Capital of the World!

Angel Capital Association‘s Executive Director, Marianne Hudson, announced on LinkedIn this morning that the 2012 Annual Summit will be held in Austin. Save the date: March 6-8.
